Our Pumpkin Contest is Coming...

Mon, 2011-09-12

Bring 'em all...Big and Small!

Saturday, October 8th.

11:30 to 12noon with prizes to follow.

We are coming up to our 17th Pumpkin Contest.  This year will have had a lot of challenges for pumpkin growers as it was such a late, wet start to the summer but we are anxious to see what our customers have grown.

Each year the champion with the biggest pumpkin gets their name on our trophy.  A few years ago our oldest son, Ashton, set his sights on getting his name on the trophy.  Growing up at the garden centre, our kids have often taken a keen interest in the pumpkin contest.   Selling hot dogs as a fundraiser for the Boys Scouts, growing their own pumpkins and just helping out with weighing the pumpkins and handing out prizes.  The other pumpkin growers and winners are a great group always eager to encourage more people to try their hand at growing pumpkins; after all the more pumpkins in the contest the more fun.  Ashton got advice from 3 or 4 past winners and seed from at least a couple of them and he began putting some effort into trying to grow a big one.  Last summer, like this summer, started with a cold, wet Spring and we worried that there would be no pumpkins at the contest.  But everyone has the same challenges with weather so it always weighs out to be fair.  Well Ashton's pumpkin wasn't huge but it was the heaviest for 2010 at 222lbs so he now has his name on the trophy.  You can see in the photos below he was pretty happy.

And now with less than a month until our 2011 Pumpkin Contest (Oct 8th) we are wondering how all the pumpkins are doing.  One thing for sure, they will have loved the warm September heat wave that we had.
