Summer Flowering Bulbs

Spring is in the air and gardeners all around town are planning out their summer gardens. Glossy magazines showcase all the beautiful summer flowering bulbs that you can add to your garden in the Spring and enjoy not only all summer but for many years.

This is the time to choose your summer flowering bulbs! Corms of Gladiolus, roots of Hosta, Hardy Geraniums, Day lilies Alstroemeria, tubers of Peonies and Dahlias, and true bulbs of Dutch Iris and Lilies are all in your garden centre for you to choose from now.

Not only is your garden well planned by choosing now, but you will get the best selection now and packaged bulbs and roots are much cheaper than buying the potted plants later on. The choice is nearly endless and the possibilities amazing.

Oriental Lilies are always a favourite and Spring is when all the colours and varieties are available. With a plant like this, beautiful colours, exquisite shape, powerful fragrance, winter hardiness and simple to grow, many gardeners would look no further for the perfect plant. But by adding some of the other lilies to your garden you can have lilies in bloom nearly all summer long. Trumpet lilies, Asiatic lilies, Tigers lilies all bloom at slightly different times and all can be left in the ground year round in Campbell River.

Shade gardens are enhanced with hostas, daylilies, ferns and bleeding heart creating a more delicate rather than dramatic garden. Whether you are adding hostas, hardy geraniums, peonies or lilies to your garden this year you will need to incorporate some manure and bonemeal to the soil when planting.

Check individual instructions carefully as some are planted in March, April and others not until May. Some are left in the ground all winter while other beauties like Dahlias and Gladiolus are lifted in the Autumn to be replanted the following Spring! Whatever your choice, I am sure you will be rewarded with gorgeous summer blooms!

Enjoy!
